I can help you with...

Depression

This is a very human vulnerability and more and more people are suffering from depression. Feeling exhausted, powerless and worrying constantly, our attention stays focussed on all the bad things that seem to be happening to us.

Trauma and PTSD

Intrusive memories of an event which do not fade away and in fact, can become worse over time.  Memories of such things can fire off strong emotional reactions and stop us functioning in life.

Anxiety

A debilitating sense of dread, fear and not being able to cope. Often accompanied by panic attacks and sometimes phobias or OCD.

Postnatal Depression

Not exclusively the domain of the new mother, new fathers can experience this too. Fatigue, loss of all pleasure in life, hypervigilant parenting, pervasive sadness, an inability to do anything other than just look after your baby.

Phobias

Whether it is a fear of enclosed places, a fear of flying, of spiders, of dogs, or any one of the many ways in which our anxiety can hijack our daily lives, I can help you with this.

Issues around having a baby

Anxiety around pregnancy.
Fear of labour and childbirth.
Loss: miscarriage, stillbirth and perinatal grief.
Assisted conception and IVF.
Sorrow and trauma around neonatal admissions or premature birth.

What is Human Givens Therapy?

A holistic, scientific framework with proven effective results

The Human Givens approach gives us a clear framework of what all human beings need to live mentally healthy and fulfilling lives – based on a solid understanding of the essential needs and resources we are all born with, whatever our circumstances or cultural background.  We all need a sense of security, feeling safe in our homes, schools and workplaces.  A sense of autonomy, of being in control of parts of our lives is essential.  We all need privacy - somewhere to reflect upon our day, and a sense of competence, achievement and a feeling of recognition in what we do.  We need intimacy and friendship, a sense of being able to give and receive attention, people with whom we can connect, and a wider community to feel part of. Finally, we all need a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives. Where these things are out of balance or neglected due to, for example, personal setbacks, difficult upbringings or loss our mental health can start to be compromised.  Additionally, if we have been exposed to trauma at any point, this can seriously interfere with our ability to function well.
The rigorous training a Human Givens practitioner undergoes means we can offer a bespoke, individualised and highly effective approach to each client's situation.  This approach is compassionate, effective and often produces rapid results.  It is effective in treating: trauma and PTSD, depression, anxiety, worry, misplaced anger, phobias, addiction, panic attacks, sleep problems, anxiety around labour and childbirth, low self-esteem, lack of confidence, in fact, any form of mental distress.

About Me

Catherine Neil

I spent nearly 20 years as a postnatal practitioner for the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) working with families at the beginning of their journeys as parents.  Additionally I worked in an NHS setting for more than a decade supporting families in my local hospital's Neonatal Unit whose babies were born prematurely or poorly.  There, I have witnessed people in extreme mental distress and have been able, using Human Givens' tried and tested techniques, to help those who are suffering in the moment.

As a Human Givens therapist (HG.Dip.P). I will work with you to help you feel better quickly.  I can work with you on any area of your life with which you need help - whether you feel depressed or have a experienced a trauma of any kind, suffer from anxiety, have an addiction, suffer from a phobia, wish to overcome a personal obstacle like giving up smoking or a fear of giving presentations.

Because of my experience in the world of childbirth and parenting I am especially equipped to work with you in a supportive and compassionate way if you have experienced birth trauma, trauma around a neonatal admission, anxiety around upcoming labour and childbirth, bereavements related to miscarriages, stillbirths or terminations, grief related to being unable to breastfeed, and difficulties related to IVF.

My practice is a comfortable space in my home where you will be warmly welcomed.  I prefer to work face to face with clients and am happy to wear a face mask if requested by the client.

I take all necessary precautions related to the spread of Covid-19 in the space where we work together.

My Clients’ Experiences

"When I came to see Catherine I was experiencing depression, fear and my marriage was close to its end after an affair. Within that first session it instantly felt different from other therapies I'd tried. All the fear was gone - through conversation, breathing and a few simple, effective, discreet techniques. After a lifetime of pain, tension and estrangement this has been the quickest and most obvious shift in me. I only needed to see her for 6 sessions - quite a difference from other therapists.  Seeing Catherine was without doubt one of the best things I've done in my life.  Her calm bespoke guidance and wisdom has helped me to feel human and made me a better father and husband."

"As a bit of a sceptic I am so surprised at how I feel following 2 sessions with you. I honestly didn’t think it would work for me but glad I’ve been open to try it. It has been life changing for me regarding my attitude and my negative thoughts about my pregnancy and impending birth!  I feel your sessions are worth every penny."

Sarah

"Catherine really did make all the difference.

My NCT leader encouraged me to get in touch with Catherine as I was experiencing a lot of anxiety around the birth of my first child and I also wanted to reduce the chances of postnatal depression.

With Catherine’s help I ended up experiencing the most empowering birth and a beautiful bond with my daughter and I can’t thank her enough.  Our sessions were solution focused, cathartic and enlightening and had a positive impact from the very first session.  Catherine was very tuned in to what I was saying and was truly kind and compassionate too.  The breath work was very helpful as were the visualisations, the detailed emailed reflections after each session and the resources she’d send to further my understanding. Without these sessions my experience would have been very different.  She gave myself, my partner and my daughter the best start to family life and we owe her so much.  Thank you!"

In 2011 The British Psychological Society published a 12-month evaluation of the Human Givens approach which showed that more than three out of four patients were either symptom-free or reliably changed as a result.
This was accomplished in an average of only 3.6 sessions, significantly better than compared modalities.
